Democracy was successful in North America because all of our founding fathers came here of their own choice. We got to decide our own boundaries and all had the same language and similar religious faith. That is important because in places like Nicaragua Britain put up their state boundaries without thinking about the differences in social and ethnical groups. [Mrs. Katz and Mr. Hornsby]
To be considered a democracy a place must have the five principals of democracy. These principals are equality, respect, compromise, and insistence on widest range of freedom. In general to believe in democracy one must agree to at least these five principles. Democracy only exists in America because the Americans choose for it to. If the people decided to get a better form of government and the government itself says no, then it is no longer a fully working democracy at all. The basic concept of democracy is that every individual, where they came from, or their wealth, was a distinct being. So they thus had their own rights, though there are times when, in certain cases, that the welfare of a few people have to be sacrificed in order for a larger part of the democracy to do better. People could, at certain times, be forced to do things, like pay taxes for things that service many people. [American Government, page 18.]
In Africa the boarders were created as if someone handed a three year old child a marker and an outline of Africa and told to color it in. Democracy cannot fully work in Africa because of the differences in language and ethnic differences. In some places there are up to four hundred different types of a language, which is hard to imagine. [Mrs. Katz] Many families and religious groups were broken up when these boarders where drawn. Families that were, for example, having a blood feud with one another ended up living close together, causing fights and even more difficulties. These types of things are also happening in different areas of the world. [Mr. Hornsby]
President George Bush said "In Iraq, the Coalition Provisional Authority and the Iraqi Governing Council are also working together to build a democracy -- and after three decades of tyranny, this work is not easy. The former dictator ruled by terror and treachery, and left deeply ingrained habits of fear and distrust. Remnants of his regime, joined by foreign terrorists, continue their battle against order and against civilization."[[link]
While President Bush makes some interesting points you have to take into mind all the things that are happening in Iraq. We are trying to convince them that all men and women are equal, when, in the Qur'an it states that Woman are the other equal half of men. While we can try to get them to take on the democratic government we cannot force them to go against their religious beliefs.
In Palestine Bush went over there and tried to get the people to vote between two people to lead their country. The people of Palestine chose a terrorist leader which lets
